On the 8th Day
First broadcast in 1984, this programme examines (then) recent scientific evidence that found that smoke and dust from a nuclear conflict could plunge the northern hemisphere into twilight for weeks and cause temperatures to drop as much as 40°C, with catastrophic effect on plants and animals. This programme tells the story of accidental discovery and spare-time research in America, Russia and Britain, which suggests that for 30 years we have had the capacity to cause a 'nuclear winter'.
